The challenge of Chess in a Checkers timeframe.
Prototype · Single player · Auto-placement
Oba is played on a 10×10 checkerboard called a Deciboard. Only the light squares are used — the dark squares are ignored entirely throughout the game.
The row closest to you is your Kingdom. The row at the far end is your opponent’s Kingdom. Everything between is the Battlefield.
Light squares are marked with symbols that identify Shield Squares — strong points where certain pieces become invincible.
Strategic note: An Oba who never leaves his Kingdom cannot be captured — but he also can never win by advance. Victory requires risk.
Each player commands 20 pieces across four ranks.
Oba — The King
Moves forward diagonally. Shielded on any K square. Reaching the opponent’s Kingdom is an immediate win — the Oba cannot be promoted.
Kakanfo — The General Supreme
Moves forward diagonally. Shielded on any H square. Promoted to x-Prime: shielded everywhere, moves any diagonal.
—— Akin Battalion ————————————
Akin Commander
Hybrid from the start — shielded by any A-marked square. Promoted to Prime: any diagonal direction.
Akin Soldiers
Shielded only by their exact matching square. Promoted to Eso upon reaching the opponent’s Kingdom — gaining battalion-wide shielding and any-diagonal movement.
—— Bomani Battalion ——————————
Bomani Commander
Hybrid from the start — shielded by any B-marked square. Promoted to Prime: any diagonal direction.
Bomani Soldiers
Shielded only by their exact matching square. Promoted to Eso upon reaching the opponent’s Kingdom — gaining battalion-wide shielding and any-diagonal movement.
—— Olugbeja Battalion —————————
Olugbeja Commander
Hybrid from the start — shielded by any D-marked square. Promoted to Prime: any diagonal direction.
Olugbeja Soldiers
Shielded only by their exact matching square. Promoted to Eso upon reaching the opponent’s Kingdom — gaining battalion-wide shielding and any-diagonal movement.
When a piece lands on its matching Shield Square it becomes invincible — shown by a blue pulsing glow. An invincible piece cannot be jumped by any means. Invincibility ends the moment the piece moves off the square.
An invincible piece surrounded with no legal move is immobilized — cannot be captured, cannot move. It is out of play until surrounding pieces move.
Before promotion: All pieces move forward diagonally only, one square at a time, staying on light squares.
After promotion (Prime): Pieces move diagonally in any direction.
Captures: Jump diagonally over an adjacent opponent piece onto the empty square beyond. Multi-jump chains allowed. Invincible pieces cannot be jumped.
A piece with captures available must use them if you move that piece. You may choose to move a different piece instead.
Extended Play uses the same 10×10 Deciboard with identical Shield Square markings. The key differences are starting position and movement.
Pieces fill the two rows closest to each player — all squares, light and dark. Six rows of open Battlefield separate the two sides at game start.
Dark squares are playable transit territory. A piece on a dark square has no shield protection and can be attacked from up to 8 directions.
Same three conditions as Standard Play:
Strategic note: The six-row Battlefield creates a genuine deployment phase. How you cross it — shielded diagonally or exposed straight forward — defines your opening strategy.
Each player commands 20 pieces across four ranks. Only movement and starting position change from Standard Play.
Oba — The King
Moves one square diagonally forward or straight forward. Shielded on any K square. Reaching the opponent’s Kingdom is an immediate win — the Oba cannot be promoted.
Kakanfo — The General Supreme
Moves diagonally forward or straight forward before promotion. Shielded on any H square. Promoted to x-Prime: shielded everywhere, 8-direction movement.

Shield rules are identical to Standard Play — with one critical addition.
Dark squares carry no shield value. A piece on a dark square is always unshielded, regardless of type or rank. This is the central strategic tension of Extended Play: diagonal paths offer shield protection; straight forward paths offer column pressure at the cost of invincibility.
Before promotion: Move one square diagonally forward or one square straight forward (3 possible directions from most positions).
After promotion (Prime): Move one square in any of 8 directions — all four diagonals plus forward, backward, left, and right.
Captures: Diagonal jump (same as Standard) or straight forward jump. Prime pieces capture in any of 8 directions. Invincible pieces cannot be jumped. Multi-jump chains allowed.
A piece with captures available must use them if you move that piece. You may choose to move a different piece instead.
